What GRP Fibreglass Is and How It Works

GRP stands for glass-reinforced plastic — the same family of materials used in boat hulls, water tanks, and industrial containers. For flat roofing, it's applied as a series of layers: chopped strand glass matting saturated in catalysed polyester resin, allowed to cure to a hard, rigid surface, then finished with a pigmented topcoat that seals and protects the surface below.

The key characteristic of GRP as a roofing system is that it's completely seamless. There are no joints, no overlaps, no seams — the membrane is continuous from edge to edge. It's bonded directly to the deck and becomes structural once cured. On a correctly installed GRP roof with adequate fall, water simply cannot penetrate — there's nothing for it to get through.

BS 6229 sets the design and installation standard for flat roofs with flexible waterproof coverings, including a minimum finished fall of 1:80 to ensure adequate drainage.

What EPDM Rubber Is and How It Works

EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) is a synthetic rubber membrane, typically supplied in large single sheets of 1.2mm or 1.5mm thickness. It's adhered to the deck using bonding adhesive, with seams sealed using EPDM tape where sheets need to be joined. EPDM is highly flexible — it can stretch considerably without tearing — and it handles movement in the underlying deck well.

Good EPDM installations use single-piece membranes cut to size for the roof, minimising joins. Where seams are required, the quality of the tape jointing is critical. EPDM has a long track record in commercial roofing and a growing residential market.

We strip old felt completely before installing any new system. Overlaying — fitting a new membrane on top of the old one — is not something we do. It masks deck problems, adds weight the structure wasn't designed for, and shortens the life of the new membrane.
