Where Lead Is Used on Harrogate's Victorian Properties

How Lead Fails

Lead failure on Harrogate properties typically happens through one of three mechanisms:

Thermal movement: Lead expands significantly when heated and contracts when cold. A piece of lead that is too long — or that hasn't been detailed with adequate expansion allowance — will buckle when it heats up and eventually lift at its fixing edges. Lifted lead allows wind-driven rain to track underneath. This is the most common failure mode on south-facing roof elevations where summer sun and winter cold create the greatest temperature swing.

Patching brittle lead adds cost without solving the underlying problem — the surrounding material will begin to fail in the same way within a few years.
